Social media giant Meta announced on 15 February 2025, it will build a 50,000 km subsea cable project ‘Waterworth’ to enhance digital connectivity between India and the US.
♦ The project will provide industry-leading connectivity to the US, India, Brazil, South Africa, and other key regions. The project is using AI to enhance subsea cable infrastructure to improve global connectivity.
♦ According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) data, the country hosts around 17 international subsea cables across 17 district landing stations.
♦ The project will span five major continents and cover over 50,000 kilometres – longer than the Earth’s circumference – making it the world’s longest subsea cable project, utilizing the highest-capacity technology available.
