Subsea cable project ‘Waterworth’

Social media giant Meta announced on 15 February 2025, it will build a 50,000 km subsea cable project ‘Waterworth’ to enhance digital connectivity between India and the US.

The project will provide industry-leading connectivity to the US, India, Brazil, South Africa, and other key regions. The project is using AI to enhance subsea cable infrastructure to improve global connectivity.

According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) data, the country hosts around 17 international subsea cables across 17 district landing stations.

The project will span five major continents and cover over 50,000 kilometres – longer than the Earth’s circumference – making it the world’s longest subsea cable project, utilizing the highest-capacity technology available.
