♦ Social Empowerment Day is observed on March 20 every year, commemorates Mahad Satyagraha undertaken by Dr. BR Ambedkar in Kolaba District in Maharashtra. The Satyagrah was launched to end untouchability and press for the implementation of the order by Mahad Municipality, allowing the 'untouchables' to collect water from Chavdar Tank.

♦ It honours the Mahad Satyagraha, where Dr. Ambedkar broke the caste taboo on March 20, 1927, by drinking water from the Chavdar Tank (Chowder Tank) in Mahad, Maharashtra.
