♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Amman on 15 December 2025, marking the beginning of his three-nation tour of Jordan, Ethiopia and Oman.

♦ During his stay in Amman, PM Modi met King Abdullah II of Jordan at the Al Husseiniya Palace. The two leaders held discussions in both restricted and delegation-level formats and recalled their previous interactions, underscoring the warm and historic ties between India and Jordan. The discussions focused on ways to deepen cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade and investment, defence and security, renewable energy, fertilisers and agriculture, innovation, information technology and digital technologies, critical minerals, infrastructure, health and pharmaceuticals, education and capacity building, tourism and heritage, as well as culture and people-to-people exchanges.

♦ PM Modi proposed that both sides work towards increasing bilateral trade to USD 5 billion over the next five years. He also called for collaboration between Jordan’s digital payment systems and India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Fertiliser cooperation also figured prominently in the talks, with Jordan being a key supplier to India and discussions underway between companies from both countries for further investments in Jordan to meet India’s growing demand for phosphatic fertilisers. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India is Jordan’s fourth-largest trading partner.

♦ The full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan by an Indian Prime Minister comes after a gap of 37 years, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Jordan. The visit underscores the growing importance of India–Jordan relations and reflects their shared commitment to regional stability and cooperation.

♦ India and Jordan signed first bilateral agreement for cooperation and friendly ties in 1947, which got formalized in 1950, when the two countries established full-fledged diplomatic ties. Since then, high-level political engagement, robust economic cooperation and strong people-to-people links have shaped a multifaceted partnership.
