♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi on the occasion of his birth centenary on 7 August 2025.
♦ He also released a commemorative coin and a centenary memorial stamp dedicated to renowned Indian geneticist Professor M.S. Swaminathan.
♦ The theme of the conference is, “Evergreen Revolution: The Pathway to Biohappiness.”
♦ The conference offers a platform for scientists, policymakers, development professionals, and other stakeholders to discuss and deliberate on advancing the principles of the Evergreen Revolution.
♦ Key areas of focus include: sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources; sustainable agriculture for food and nutrition security; building climate resilience through adaptation; appropriate technologies for sustainable and equitable livelihoods; and the inclusion of youth, women, and marginalised communities in developmental discourse.
♦ Dr Swaminathan, who passed away in 2023, is widely regarded as the architect of India’s Green Revolution and played a key role in transforming the country from a food-deficient to a food-surplus nation.
