♦ The Ministry of Defence has signed a $248 million (Rs.2,156 crores) contract with Russia’s Rosoboronexport (RoE) for the procurement of 1,000 horsepower (HP) engines for T-72 tanks on 7 March 2025.
♦ The deal includes the supply of engines in fully formed, completely knocked down, and semi knocked down conditions.
♦ As part of the agreement, Rosoboronexport will transfer technology to Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (Heavy Vehicle Factory) in Avadi, Chennai.
♦ This will facilitate the integration and licensed production of the engines in India, supporting the “Make in India” initiative in the defence sector.
♦ The Indian Army’s T-72 tanks, currently powered by 780 HP engines, serve as the backbone of the country’s armored fleet.
