♦ Justice Joymalya Bagchi of the Calcutta High Court was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on 10 March 2025.
♦ He will serve as a judge in the Supreme Court for six years.
♦ After the retirement of Justice Viswanathan on May 25, 2031, Justice Bagchi will assume the role of Chief Justice of India until his retirement on October 2, 2031.
♦ The last judge from the Calcutta High Court to be appointed to the Supreme Court was Justice Altamas Kabir.
♦ He retired as Chief Justice of India on July 18, 2013. Since then, no Chief Justice has come from the Calcutta High Court.
♦ Justice Bagchi is ranked 11th in the all-India seniority list of high court judges, including chief justices.
♦ Justice Bagchi was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta high court in June 2011.
♦ In January 2021, he was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh high court, before being repatriated to the Calcutta high court in November 2021.
♦ With Justice Bagchi’s appointment, the Supreme Court will reach its sanctioned strength of 34 judges.
