♦ Kirsty Coventry was elected President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 20 March 2025, for an eight-year term of office.
♦ She becoming the first woman and first African to lead the world’s wealthiest multi-sport organization in its 130-year history.
♦ She replaces outgoing President Thomas Bach, who was first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2021.
♦ She received 49 votes in the first round, exactly the number required for a majority from the 97 votes cast.
♦ Kirsty will assume office after the handover from President Bach on Olympic Day, 23 June 2025.
♦ At the 2004 Games in Athens, Coventry won the gold medal in the 200-meter backstroke.
♦ Four years later, in 2008 in Beijing, she won gold again. In addition to those two gold medals, she collected four Olympic silver medals and one bronze.
