The Global Family Day is observed every year on January 1. In 1997, the United Nations General Assembly declared the International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Nonviolence for the Children of the World. One important project was the release of the book One Day in Peace – on January 1, 2000. The book imagined a future where peace replaces war. This was just the start of a peaceful movement. In 1999, all UN member states were encouraged to spend the first day of the year creating plans on maintaining peace. Due to the success of this day, the UN declared Global Family Day an annual event in 2001.
