♦ India’s D. Gukesh clinched the 2024 World Chess Championship on 12 December 2024, becoming the sport’s youngest-ever titleholder at 18. He defeated Ding Liren (China) in the final.
♦ Gukesh's victory in game 14 resulted in a final score of 7.5 against Ding's 6.5.
♦ Gukesh's win surpasses the previous record held by Russia's Garry Kasparov, who claimed the title at 22.
♦ Gukesh has become the second Indian to hold the World Chess Championship title, following in the footsteps of five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand.
♦ Gukesh is only the third Asian to win the World championship. Viswanathan Anand, who is now a mentor for Gukesh, was the first, and Ding the second.
♦ He is also only the 18th World champion in history, which dates back to 1886.
♦ Winner Gukesh received $1.35 million (approx. Rs.11.45 crore) in prize money, and runner-up Liren received $1.15 million (approx. Rs.9.75 crore).
