♦ The central government on 30 April 2025 announced that caste enumeration will be included in the upcoming population census.
♦ The decision taken at the high-powered cabinet committee on political affairs chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
♦ Bihar, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have conducted caste surveys in the last three years, while Karnataka is mulling the release of data of a survey conducted in 2015.
♦ All states were ruled by non-BJP dispensations when the surveys were done.
♦ Under Article 246 of the Constitution, the census is listed at Entry 69 of the Union List in the Seventh Schedule, making it exclusively a Union subject.
Other decisions:
♦ The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs also approved a Rs.22,864 crore project to build a 166.8 km four-lane greenfield access-controlled highway between Mawlyngkhung in Meghalaya and Panchgram in Assam.
♦ The project will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).
♦ Out of the total stretch, 144.80 km falls in Meghalaya and 22.00 km in Assam.
♦ This high-speed corridor, part of National Highway No. 06, is expected to transform regional connectivity and boost economic activity.
♦ The Union Cabinet approved the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane for the 2025–26 season at Rs.355 per quintal for a basic recovery rate of 10.25 percent.
