S.M. Krishna

♦ Former Karnataka Chief Minister S.M. Krishna passed away in Bengaluru on 10 December 2024). He was 92 years old. Krishna was born on 1 May 1932 in Somanahalli, Mandya district. ♦ He held several key positions, including Speaker of the Karnataka assembly, Chief Minister of Karnataka (1999–2004), and Governor of Maharashtra (2004–2008). ♦ From 2009 to 2012, he served as India’s External Affairs Minister under the Congress-led UPA II government. ♦ In 2017, Krishna joined the BJP. ♦ Krishna was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2023.

జీవావరణవేత్త మాధవ్‌ గాడ్గిల్‌ (82)కు ఛాంపియన్‌ ఆఫ్‌ ఎర్త్‌ అవార్డును ఐక్య రాజ్య సమితి (ఐరాసా) 2024, డిసెంబరు 10న ప్రకటించింది. ఐరాసా ఏటా ప్రకటించే ఈ అవార్డు పర్యావరణ రంగంలో ఐరాస ఇచ్చే అత్యున్నత అవార్డు. పశ్చిమ కనుమల్లో జీవవైవిధ్య సంరక్షణకు గాడ్గిల్‌ చేసిన కృషిని గౌరవిస్తూ సమితి ఈ అవార్డునిచ్చి సత్కరిస్తోంది. ఈ ఏడాది (2024) ఛాంపియన్‌ ఆఫ్‌ అవార్డు పొందిన ఏకైక భారతీయుడు గాడ్గిలే.

సహాయ అటార్నీ జనరల్‌గా హర్మీత్‌

అమెరికా న్యాయశాఖలో పౌర హక్కుల సహాయ అటార్నీ జనరల్‌గా భారతీయ అమెరికన్‌ హర్మీత్‌ థిల్లాన్‌ (54) నామినేట్‌ అయ్యారు. ఆమె నియామకాన్ని ఖరారు చేస్తూ అమెరికా అధ్యక్షుడిగా బాధ్యతలు చేపట్టనున్న ట్రంప్‌ ప్రకటన చేశారు. చండీగఢ్‌లో జన్మించిన ఆమె తన చిన్నతనంలో తల్లిదండ్రులతో కలిసి అమెరికా వెళ్లారు. 2016లో క్లీవ్‌లాండ్‌లో జరిగిన రిపబ్లికన్‌ పార్టీ జాతీయ సదస్సులో వేదిక ఎక్కిన తొలి భారతీయ అమెరికన్‌గా నిలిచారు.

గుండెకు సంక్లిష్టమైన సొంత నాడీ వ్యవస్థ ఉందని స్వీడన్‌లోని కరోలిన్‌స్కా ఇన్‌స్టిట్యూట్, కొలంబియా విశ్వవిద్యాలయ శాస్త్రవేత్తల ఇటీవలి పరిశోధన తేల్చింది. ఇదో మినీ మెదడులా వ్యవహరిస్తుందని వివరించింది. తలలోని మెదడు.. కదలికలు, శ్వాస లాంటి లయబద్ధ విధులను నియంత్రిస్తున్న రీతిలోనే గుండెలోని ఈ చిన్న బుర్ర కూడా హృదయ స్పందనలను నియంత్రిస్తున్నట్లు శాస్త్రవేత్తలు తెలిపారు. ఈ పరిశోధనలో గుండెలోని భిన్నరకాల నాడీ కణాలను శాస్త్రవేత్తలు గుర్తించారు. వాటికి వేర్వేరు బాధ్యతలు ఉన్నట్లు కూడా తేల్చారు. కొన్ని న్యూరాన్ల సమూహానికి.. గుండె లయను స్థిరంగా ఉంచే పేస్‌మేకర్‌ లక్షణాలూ ఉన్నట్లు గమనించారు. హృదయ స్పందన రేటు నియంత్రణపై ప్రస్తుతమున్న అభిప్రాయంతో ఈ పరిశోధన విభేదిస్తోంది.

ఇండియన్‌ సైబర్‌ థ్రెట్‌ రిపోర్ట్‌-2025

2023 అక్టోబరు నుంచి 2024 సెప్టెంబరు వరకు ఏడాది కాలంలో దేశవ్యాప్తంగా ప్రతి సెకనుకు 11 సైబర్‌ దాడులు జరిగినట్లు ‘ఇండియా సైబర్‌ థ్రెట్‌ రిపోర్ట్‌-2025’ నివేదిక పేర్కొంది. 2025లో ఆర్టిఫిషియల్‌ ఇంటెలిజెన్స్‌ (కృత్రిమ మేధ) పరిజ్ఞానంతో కూడిన మాల్‌వేర్‌లతో సైబర్‌ దాడులు ఎక్కువగా జరిగే అవకాశముందని అంచనా వేసింది. డేటా సెక్యూరిటీ కౌన్సిల్‌ ఆఫ్‌ ఇండియా (డీఎస్‌సీఐ), సెక్‌రైట్‌ అనే సంస్థ ఇటీవల ఈ నివేదికను విడుదల చేసింది. దేశవ్యాప్తంగా 84 లక్షల ఎండ్‌పాయింట్ల (నేరం జరిగినట్లు గుర్తించిన కేంద్రం)లో 36.9 కోట్ల మాల్‌వేర్లతో దాడులు జరిగినట్లు గుర్తించారు. హెల్త్‌కేర్‌ (21.82%), ఆతిథ్యం (19.57%), బ్యాంకింగ్, ఫైనాన్షియల్‌ సర్వీసెస్‌ అండ్‌ ఇన్సూరెన్స్‌- బీఎఫ్‌ఎస్‌ఐ (17.38%), ఎడ్యుకేషన్‌ (15.64%), ఎంఎస్‌ఎంఈ (7.52%), మాన్యుఫ్యాక్చరింగ్‌ (6.88%), ప్రభుత్వ సంస్థలు (6.1%), ఐటీ/ఐటీఈఎస్‌ (5.09%) రంగాలు దాడులకు గురయ్యాయి.

క్యూఎస్‌ ర్యాంకింగ్స్‌

క్యూఎస్‌ వరల్డ్‌ యూనివర్సిటీ ర్యాంకింగ్స్‌ 2024, డిసెంబరు 10న విడుదలయ్యాయి. అందులో భారత్‌కు చెందిన ఐఐటీ దిల్లీ 255 స్థానాలు మెరుగుపరుచుకుని ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా 171వ స్థానానికి చేరింది. ‘సస్టేనబిలిటీ’లో ఐఐటీ దిల్లీ ఈ ర్యాంక్‌ సాధించింది. బెంగళూరులోని ఇండియన్‌ ఇన్‌స్టిట్యూట్‌ ఆఫ్‌ సైన్స్‌ (ఐఐఎస్‌సీ) పర్యావరణ విద్యలో ప్రపంచంలోని టాప్‌ 50 విద్యా సంస్థల్లో ఒకటిగా నిలిచింది. మొత్తంగా భారత్‌ నుంచి 78 విశ్వవిద్యాలయాలు 2025 క్యూఎస్‌ సస్టేనబిలిటీ ర్యాంకింగ్స్‌లో చోటు సంపాదించుకున్నాయి. దేశంలోని టాప్‌ 10 విద్యాసంస్థల్లో 9 సంస్థలు తమ స్థానాల్ని మెరుగుపరుచుకున్నాయి. ఈ జాబితాలో కెనడాలోని టొరొంటో వర్సిటీ టాప్‌ ర్యాంక్‌ సాధించింది. ఈటీహెచ్‌ జూరిక్‌ (స్విట్జర్లాండ్‌) రెండో స్థానంతో నిలిచింది.

ఎస్‌ఎం కృష్ణ మరణం

కర్ణాటక మాజీ ముఖ్యమంత్రి, కేంద్ర మాజీ మంత్రి ఎస్‌ఎం కృష్ణ (92) 2024, డిసెంబరు 10న బెంగళూరులో మరణించారు. ఆయన పూర్తిపేరు సోమనహళ్లి మల్లయ్య కృష్ణ. 1932 మే 1న సోమనహళ్లిలో జన్మించారు. 1980ల్లో కేంద్ర మంత్రిగా పరిశ్రమలు, ఆర్థిక శాఖలు చూశారు. 1999లో కర్ణాటక పీసీసీ అధ్యక్ష బాధ్యతలు చేపట్టి కాంగ్రెస్‌కు ఘనవిజయాన్ని అందించి, నాలుగున్నరేళ్ల పాటు ముఖ్యమంత్రిగా పనిచేశారు. 2004లో మహారాష్ట్ర గవర్నర్‌గా, 2009 నుంచి 2012 వరకు కేంద్ర విదేశాంగ మంత్రిగా ఉన్నారు. 2017లో కాంగ్రెస్‌ను వీడి భాజపాలో చేరారు.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG)

♦ Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted the second bilateral meeting with Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on 9 December 2024, at ICG HQs, New Delhi as part of the ongoing cooperation framework established under the MoU signed between the two Coast Guards. The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration in key areas such as Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), Maritime Law Enforcement, Marine Pollution Response, and Capacity Building. ♦ The discussions were led by ICG Deputy Director General (Operations & Coastal Security) Inspector General Anupam Rai and PCG Deputy Commandant for Administration Rear Admiral Edgar L Ybanez. ♦ The MoU signed in August 2023 underscores the shared vision of the ICG and PCG in ensuring a secure and pollution-free maritime environment in the Indo-Pacific region. This bilateral meeting further solidifies the professional relationship between the two Coast Guards, contributing to regional stability and enhancing cooperation in addressing maritime challenges.

UNCCD Report

♦ According to the UNCCD report, over 77.6% of Earth’s land experienced drier conditions during the three decades leading up to 2020 compared to the previous 30-year period. During the same period, global drylands expanded by approximately 4.3 million square kilometres — an area nearly a third larger than India — now covering more than 40 per cent of the Earth's land. The report was released at the 16th conference of the UNCCD in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on 9 December 2024. ♦ Meanwhile, the number of people living in drylands has doubled to 2.3 billion over the past three decades. ♦ Models suggest that as many as 5 billion could inhabit drylands by 2100 in a worst-case climate change scenario.
