♦ The Dalai Lama was awarded the prestigious Gold Mercury Award for Peace and Sustainability in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. ♦ Nicolas De Santis, President and Secretary General of Gold Mercury International, presented the Gold Mercury Award for Peace to the Dalai Lama. ♦ The award was presented by Gold Mercury International, a globally recognised think tank and international non-governmental organisation (INGO) dedicated to promoting peace, governance and sustainable development. ♦ The Gold Mercury International Award, originally established in Italy, has evolved into a globally recognised honour for individuals and organisations making significant contributions to world peace, good governance and international commerce. ♦ Over the years, the award has been presented in major cities such as Brussels, Moscow, Madrid and Washington, celebrating visionary leaders who shape the future with courage and integrity. ♦ Gold Mercury International, now headquartered in London, continues its mission under the leadership of Santis, son of the organisation's founder, Eduardo De Santis.

Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC)

♦ Gross GST collections increased 9.9% to Rs.1.96 lakh crore in March 2025 as against Rs.1.78 lakh crore in the March 2024, according to data from Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) released on 1 April 2025. ♦ This was the highest since April 2024, when gross GST collections were slightly higher at Rs.2.01 lakh crore. ♦ Net GST increased 7.3% to Rs.1.76 lakh crore in the month under review as against Rs.1.64 lakh crore in the year ago period. ♦ On an annual basis, the government collected Rs.22.08 lakh crore in Gross GST in 2024-25, which was 9.4% more than revenue collected in 2023-24. ♦ Net GST collections rose 8.6% to Rs.19.6 lakh crore in the past fiscal against Rs.18.01 lakh crore in the year before.

Bilateral Tri-Service India-US Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR)

♦ The fourth edition of Exercise Tiger Triumph, the bilateral Tri-Service India-US Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise, began at Eastern Naval Command (ENC) base, Visakhapatnam, on 1 April 2025. ♦ This will continue till April 13. ♦ It consists of two phases. The harbour phase will continue here till April 7, while sea phase will be held from April 8 to 13. ♦ This exercise is aimed at developing interoperability and formulation of Standard Operating Procedures for conducting Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations between the two countries. ♦ This exercise will not only strengthen interoperability but also will help in a coordinated response in disaster relief and rescue. ♦ exercise will witness the participation of Indian Naval ships Jalaswa, Gharial, and Mumbai along with Integral Helicopters. ♦ The C-130, P-8I aircraft, MI-17 Helicopters of the Indian Air Force and the 91 Infantry Brigade and 12 Mech Infantry Battalion of the Indian Army will also take part in this exercise. ♦ The US side will be represented by US Naval ships Comstock and Ralph Johnson.

Highest-ever capacity addition in 2024-25 financial year

♦ India’s renewable energy sector achieved the highest-ever capacity addition in 2024-25 financial year, installing 25 gigawatts by the end of March 2025. ♦ New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said this on 1April 2025. ♦ He said that the sector witnessed an increase of almost 35 percent in the last financial year compared to 18.57 gigawatts achieved in the financial year 2023-24.  ♦ He added that India’s solar PV cell manufacturing capacity also increased nearly three times, from 9 gigawatts in March 2024 to around 25 gigawatts in March 2025. ♦ Joshi further emphasized that since the launch of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, more than 1.1 lakh households have benefited, and nearly 7 lakh employments were also generated in the previous financial year (2024-25).

♦ Indian women’s hockey stalwart Vandana Katariya announced her retirement from international hockey on 1 April 2025. ♦ She scored 158 goals in 320 international matches after making her debut for India in 2009. Vandana departs as the most-capped player in the history of Indian women’s hockey.  ♦ At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she became the first and only Indian woman to score a hat-trick at the Games. ♦ She also represented India at the Rio 2016 Olympics, two FIH Hockey Women’s World Cups in 2018 and 2022, three consecutive Commonwealth Games from 2014 to 2022 as well as three successive Asian Games from 2014 to 2022. ♦ Vandana Katariya also won silver medals at the Asian Games 2018, Women's Asian Champions Trophy Japan 2013 and Women's Asian Champions Trophy Donghae 2018. ♦ Vandana was honoured with some of India’s most prestigious awards, including the Arjuna Award (2021) and the Padma Shri (2022). ♦ She also received the Hockey India Balbir Singh Sr. Award for Player of the Year (Women) in 2014, the Hockey India President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2021, and the Hockey India Dhanraj Pillay Award for Forward of the Year in 2021 and 2022, cementing her status as one of India’s finest forwards.

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font at Hyderabad House on 1April 2025. ♦ The two leaders held discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors, including economic, commercial, and societal domains. ♦ Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font arrived in New Delhi on April 1 for a five-day state visit to India. ♦ As part of the visit, several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were exchanged, including agreements on Antarctica cooperation, cultural exchange programs, and disaster management. ♦ The leaders expressed confidence that the agreements signed would pave the way for deeper engagement between the two nations.
