47th ASEAN Summit

♦ Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually participated in the 47th ASEAN Summit 2025 on 26 October 2025.

♦ This was Prime Minister’s 12th participation in the India-ASEAN Summit. In his address, Prime Minister congratulated Timor Leste on becoming the 11th Member of ASEAN.

♦ Malaysia, as the Chair of ASEAN, hosting ths Summit and Related Summits under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability” at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The summit concludes on 28 October 2025.

♦ Philippines will be the Chair of ASEAN in 2026. India began formal engagement with ASEAN in 1992 as a "Sectoral Dialogue Partner" (Secretary-level interaction) and subsequently as a "Dialogue Partner" in 1995.

♦ The ASEAN was established in Thailand’s Bangkok in 1967, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined ASEAN in 1984, followed by Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999.
