♦ According to the 15th edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, nine Indian institutions earned top-50 positions across various specific subject areas.

♦ Among specific subject categories, the highest-ranking institution is the Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, which secured the 20th spot globally for Engineering - Mineral and Mining. Among the broad subject categories, IIT Delhi (Rank 26) and IIT Bombay (Rank 28) are the only Indianinstitutes which bagged a rank in the top 50 this year.

♦ They are both a part of the broad subject category of Engineering & Technology.

♦ The 2025 QS World University Rankings by Subject covers 55 subjects across five broad areas -- Arts & Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences & Management.

♦ The rankings saw 79 Indian universities included this year (2025), 10 more than last year. In total, Indian institutions appeared 533 times in the rankings, reflecting a 25.7% increase. Of these, 156 improved their ranking, while 101 dropped.

♦ India also secured the fifth-highest number of new entries globally, behind China, the US, the UK, and Korea.

♦ Notable new entrants to the top 100 include IIT Madras and Vellore Institute of Technology for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, and IISc Bangalore and IIT Kanpur for Engineering-Mineral and Mining.
